Open Call: Pitch Reels
The Art of War (Sample Reel) (1:29)
Jason Decker | West Hollywood, CA
The War of the Sexes. Since the murky darkness of prehistory, the battle has been waged. The outcome has always been the same. The man appears to come out the winner but, behind the scenes, the woman always ends up holding him by the... well, I'll let you finish the metaphor.
But what happens when a wrench is thrown in the works? What happens when the playing field is not only uneven, but isn't even for the right game? In "The Art of War", these epic questions are tested among the familiar bookshelves of a public library. Based on a one-minute project I shot as a student, the film explores the dynamics of sexuality as an instrument of battle. Is it ever truly possible to win in a conflict of emotions? Does Lao Tzu apply to conflicting passions? "The Art of War" has the answers.

Art of War
Rounds 1&2 of this epic battle of the sexes, left me feeling that this fight is far from over. I am want to see the raw, enticing emotional conclusion; win, lose or draw!!
Response to kmdelaney
I'm sorry to see that a clear supporter of another filmmaker has decided to post biased critiques on several of the other filmmakers' comment boards. In my proposal for a three-minute narrative exploration of the "battle of the sexes", I think I have made it pretty clear that I am not interested in re-hashing a "regressive and exclusive understanding of gender" - whatever that actually means. I'm interested in exploring what has become a cliche by throwing a wrench in the works and tilting the playing field.
I am very open to critiques of what I have presented (and the fact that I mis-typed Lao Tzu for Sun Tzu is more than ripe for critique) but being attacked for a presumption of what I may create is a bit much.
War of the Sexes
I would like to see how this one plays out. The great victory in the battle of the sexes is that men always win the battle and get the girl!
War of the Sexes: Regressive Gender Ideology
The proposal offers a large audience another regressive and exclusive understanding of gender. I hope to see a broader inspection of an idea too often reproduced within popular films. Of course the "battle of the sexes" seems innate when cultural practices encode and normalize behavior within every day life.
War of the Sexes - TACTICS 101
That's my kind of war. They never taught that in my tactics class. Too bad -- I would have really liked my DI to say, "Do it again until you get it right". Great short -- the actress was really covincing - (must be the good directing).
War of the Sexes
Very indicative of the battle of the sexes that has been waged over time. Every once in a while we have to let the men think they can win. Great portrayal!
kisses
good kiss. better kiss. where's the great kiss? More...
Thanks from the Filmmaker
War sucks. Yet it's basic framework dictates our day-to-day interactions big and small. I look forward to the chance to work that premise into a short, entertaining, and thought-provoking critique. Thanks for stopping by, checking out my proposal, and giving support through your ratings and comments.
