Open Call: Pitch Reels
The Birth of War (Sample Reel) (5:25)
Elizabeth Wood | New York, NY
The idea of war is so essential to the history of mankind, yet is so foreign to the innocence we experience as children, or is it? I propose to create a three minute film from serious interviews with children, exploring their concept of what war is, and why we go to war. This will be intercut with scenes of the children playing, fighting, learning. This three minute film will provoke the viewer to question their own ideas of war, and how that may or may have not been influenced in the process of growing up.

Film: The Birth of War
The concept of looking at war from the perspective of children is both timely and timeless. It looks from the sample clip that the filmmaker is gifted at interviewing children without getting in the way, I believe her treatment could make a powerful statement.
NOTE
the footage above is not from the film that will be created, but rather a sample of the work from the filmmaker. please see the the heading at the top of open call that indicates that the video on this web page is not related to the final project from open call.
Birth of War...
...seems to be about power not truth. the truth sucks, yeah but...these kids still have the power of their youth to buffer the emotional effects of war.
i find this both uplifting and downreaching...showing the truth without forcing the audience to feel it, too.
i can't wait to see how it works out
but is it w ar?
Feels very far off the Open Call theme to me.
The Birth of War
I will be curious to see how the filmaker selects the young, supposedly untainted audience. Children in New Orleans have a much different and outlook on devastation than children in say: nowhereville North Dakota, San Francisco, South Chicago, North Chicago. How does one sample a child's socio-geo-economic-political impacts? This sounds like a tough short!
Film: The Birth of War
I think that children are far more affected by war than we realize. So filming their feelings and thoughts on the subject is a wonderful idea.
the birth of war
Well done film demonstrating how
the aftermath of a natural disaster has implications of a future of man-made disasters.
Film: The Birth of War
A film about the children ravaged by Katrina seems an appropriate beginning to the concept regarding "the birth of war."
