Diana and Carrie (3:03)
Mary Scarbrough - Fort Wayne, IN
The story of Diana and Carrie is one like many in the nation; a daughter taking care of an aging parent. What makes their story unique is that it is an inspiring yet simple story of faith, patience and respect.
Diana left her home town of Philadelphia trusting that her mother (who was in good health at the time) was in good hands with her older siblings. Many years later Carrie had a stroke and was being cared for by Diana’s older sister. This older sister contracted cancer and was unable to care for Carrie any longer. Diana’s other siblings were not capable of taking care of Carrie so she was thrust into the role of a caregiver. She had to sacrifice many career goals not to mention personal goals but she didn’t look at it that way. She is dedicated to the golden rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Once Diana and Carrie settled into their new living situation in Indiana Diana discovered a valuable resource in the community: An adult day care center. What Diana found in this service were people who have a genuine respect for caregivers. They know that caregivers need a break to maintain of sense of sanity. They also know that those being cared for need a change of routine and a sense of importance and value. This service provided Diana and Carrie a sense of help and hope in their family situation.

Sibling relationships are challenging when it comes to caring for an aging parent. I liked the resource of the day care center as a solution. Often people don't know what resources are available to assist them.

Well done. Also an excellent promotion for th eadult day care centers that are being developed. People caring for those in Deep Age need that kind of support if they are providing care in their home.

Really, really liked that one. Many caregivers need the knowledge and encouragement to find outside resources for their loved one. I also liked that this clip stated the ever present reality of family not always sharing in the responsibility of caring for our elderly. If possible, I would like to see the program offer some advice to caregivers as to how to cope with the resentment and anger that often results from them feeling stranded and abandoned.
