Open Call: Pitch Reels
Democracy or Republic? (6:27)
Kevin Earl Dunn - Houston TX
The Pitch:
Democracy or Republic? The majority of people believe that we live in a democracy, when actually we live in a republic. That doesn't matter does it? It is just a matter of semantics isn't it? Or is it? Until the 1972 presidential elections, the popular vote in the democratic primaries had absolutely no effect on the outcome of the nominating convention. After the riots that nearly destroyed the 1968 convention in Chicago, the Democratic National Committee revamped the primary system so that the actual popular vote would be used in determining the nominee. There is one small flaw in that system, as is being shown today, if one candidate cannot get the necessary delegates to secure the nomination through the popular vote, then their only recourse is to court the votes of the superdelegates. Once again the popular vote will not matter as these appointed, not elected, superdelegates decide the Democratic Presidential Candidate. My film would simply ask the question, if appointed, not elected superdelegates can decide the party's fate, what is the point of voting?
