Open Call: Pitch Reels
Faith and Circumstance (1:06)
Becky Beamer + Jeremy Zipple
The Pitch:
The separation of church and state is a corner stone value of the United States of America, but completely separating church and state is almost impossible. Each citizen has his or her own personal beliefs--including every presidential candidate. Their morals and religious affiliations are offered to the public as a basis for electability.
Hillary Clinton says, “You know, I have, ever since I’ve been a little girl, felt the presence of God in my life…”
Barack Obama claims, “My faith teaches me that I can sit in church and pray all I want, but I won't be fulfilling God's will unless I go out and do the Lord's work.”
John McCain says, "I pray regularly, and I don't have to be getting ready for bed, to be getting up in the morning. I seize opportunities throughout the day."
The media tells us that these statements are the building blocks for the next President of the United States.
This 3-minute experimental and high-energy short combines influential leaders of the past and future in an examination of faith. This piece intercuts iconic visuals of the United States with media coverage from the 2008 Presidential Campaign. Fast paced beats, famous speeches and clips tell the story of this year’s presidential candidates.
While each leader is unique in their religious differences; their voices echo a similar message: Faith is a powerful thing. But when the media gets involved everything gets a little messy.

Great
I can see how this little intro could lead into a nice look at the meaning of "separation of church and state," a phrase, by the way, that does not appear in the Constitution or Dec of Ind. I think a weaving together of history with the campaign of 2008 would be very helpful and interesting, especially when edited in this very engaging way.
Faith and comment
clip provides a mix of politics and religion in a smoothe way
I love it
I'd love to see a story examining faith & politics. Great work!
Sounds like a great idea
More than anything else, religion has influenced the world we live in.
Well cut and fantastic content
This would make a very interesting story. So often politicians babble their religious maxims; most often, they are just saying what they think the majority of American Christians would like to hear. What all this means, and how the American people interpret fatih would make a wonderful investigation.
