It's Not Easy Being Blue (11:37)

The Pitch:
Guadalupe County, Texas is right in the middle of a very red state. The formerly rural community is becoming suburban in parts and is changing every day. What hasn't changed a lot is the fact that these days, Democrat is still a 4-letter word. Despite this, the local Democrats toil election after election, candidate by candidate, to put the county in the blue column. The recent primary, with Texas in play for the first time in a long time, showed local Dems that they weren't alone -- they were part of a pretty big secret society after all. I plan to conduct one or two-question interviews with some of these local Democrats, the local Republicans who think they're crazy for even trying, the local elected officials on both sides, and the colorful citizens who have opinions as big as the Lone Star State. People here aren't afraid to speak their minds, so you get an unfiltered look into the thoughts of regular citizens.
I plan to use a style similar to the one I used for Our Town:Seguin, a documentary short I filmed in one day, walking around and asking 52 locals what they thought of when they thought of their town and editing it together with children's drawings of the town.

This would be a most timely project because of the dramatic Democratic Primary happening in the middle of Old Republican territory. I would think the comments gathered would be very interesting!

I turned out blue growing up in this red area of the state, but I hope that this short doc will show that we're not so different after all. An equal amount of screen time to each side would emphasize the divisiveness of the parties in the entire country in a striking, balanced way that we don't really see in the mainstream media. Great idea!

Answer to Question on B-roll
I plan to use b-roll of the people I interview and of the county itself -- places that represent the different parts of the county.
If Dems are a 4 letter word ...
Lovely production style, though no B-roll. Over the course of 3 minutes, I want to see more than talking heads. What will you do?

I agree with many of the comments. it's nice and simple. the hook that makes it fresh is the unusual circumstances that put texas dems in the spotlight, and the way that makes people feel less isolated.

Don't live in Guadalupe County, but think its a great idea. Maybe some other counties would consider doing the same thing.

There's always room for dissent. I'd like to hear a few different voices coming from Seguin, for a change. I hope this film gets made, no matter the PBS decision.

Interesting concept. I am anxious to see if there are even 5 minutes worth of Democrats in Guadalupe County. It is good to identify and label them for further study and/or quarantine!!!!
