Open Call: Pitch Reels
The Art of Politics (1:15)
Mike Siegel, Dana Hopper, Dawn Zielsdorf - Los Angeles, CA
The Pitch:
Consider:
A Democratic nominee commissions graffiti artists for campaign murals Street artists spend substantial time, money, and effort creating independent political works. Historically, subversive art becomes a focal point in election propaganda.
The Presidential Election of '08 promises to to be a historic occasion on multiple fronts, from the obvious: the potential of a black or female president; to the less obvious: political propaganda from fringe artist groups supported by the candidates.
Tackling the latter, we delve into the world of street and graffiti artists and the political machines that some groups say utilize these artists' talents to reach forgotten demographics, while others insist they are exploiting these artists for votes.
From the controversial candidate-supported posters to graffitists laying claim to their issues on alleyways and street signs, we purport to visualize the debate facing the underground arts movement, as it moves into the public eye of national politics, with the words and works straight from the artists and the campaign spokesmens' mouths.

The Art of Politics
Your film left me intrigued and wanting to see more. Keep us updated on the sequal :)
Unwrapped cellophane
I would like to see this pitch developed to hear more of those voices that take the cellophane off the packaged message, and to see those images that cut to the chase. Art engages the half of the brain that contains emotional REASONING and thereby completeing the sterile cognizant understanding of the issues at hand. We can't understand the whole of anything without it! I'm glad to see the post by danah11 stating there is more to come.
Take the wrapping off!
The Art of Politics
Thanks all for the insightful comments. Linda, we hope to give you more. We have interviews lined up with prominent streets artists Mear One, often noted for his political work, as well as Kofie, who painted the mural for Obama's Los Angeles campaign headquarters.
We will also have reaction from the Obama campaign regarding the artwork they have directly or indirectly commissioned from street artists, and its role in the election campaign.
"The Art of Politics"
Politics is an art, just like graffiti and street painting. It is selling someone a thought or idea in a creative way. Your video opens the door to the controversy of using and paying artistic talent to promote political views. This video is well done and has the viewer wanting more!!
Linda Mattia
The interpretation of art depends on the viewer.
I am not surprised that politicians are using graffitti artists to voice their messages in a painting. A painting can be interpreted in various ways and depending on the viewer, those messages can be rationalized differently.
"Forgotten Demographics"
The relationship between Art and Politics is pre-given. Unavoidable fact that there is no art that is not already political. It just depends on how politicians capitalize on the expressions with subliminal content.
Great job guys!
