Open Call: Pitch Reels
Why I Stopped Voting (1:39)
Rock Shum - Boston, MA
The Pitch:
"Choose or Lose," MTV told millions of young people, when I was a young person in the 90s. It must have worked, because the first chance I had to vote in 1998, I did so with enthusiasm and purpose. I still remember the first person I voted for. It was Chuck Schumer for Senator of New York. He won and I felt I made a difference. I even got a chance to tell Senator Schumer himself of him being my first vote, on one bizarre subway train ride coming back from a Yankees game. I was a proud voter.
Fast forward to today, ten years later, and the pride I had has disappeared. At this moment, I have no interest in voting. Why? Critics say young people don't vote because they are indifferent, or they don't understand how the issues effect them. Sure, that's true for many, but it's not that simple.
Through visuals of photos and documents, I will chronicle the rise and fall of my voting record in the last ten years. From a picture of me with Chuck Schumer looking like an awkward teenager, to the picture of the burning WTC towers I took in 2001 from my apartment, to the Wrist Strong bracelet I wear watching The Colbert Report - this short will explain the events of my life, and why I stopped voting.

interested in your story
Hi i know someone who would be interested in your story regardless of whether you win this contest....check out kat at voteswift.org - she might be in NYC next friday...m
Hmmm
If this was treated like a personal biography of your voting I could see it being interesting. Is there some transformative moment that you could include to give it a sense of story arc?
my vote doesn't count either...
there's only revolution through a grass roots effort...none of these three candidates will enforce any real change. that said, i may vote Obama if McCain somehow is close to winning....the lesser of two evils.
will it be voiceover or soundtrack?
Will the images presented be the easy hot points or will it go to a more personal level? Not that hot points like 9/11 aren't important, or the hugely popular Colbert Report doesn't hit upon today's view of the politics as late night entertainment, will the pitch dig deeper...? Will a voiceover explain more clearly the individuals change or will it just be an entertaining MTV video with some popular music over popular images...
