Every American is affected by global warming, some more directly than others, but few individuals feel the consequences more intimately and immediately than fishermen. Through a series of interviews, first-hand experiences, and scientific animations, our short documentary will provide a personal window into our local New England fishing communities. The Wheeler family has fished cod off the coast of Rhode Island for over a hundred years. At the end of fishing expeditions that last up to 36 hours at sea, Alan and his son Luke Wheeler record their catch in logbooks. It doesn’t take their well-kept records, however, to notice the depleting fish populations and warming ocean temperatures. About a hundred miles north, Ed Smith is a proud fisherman from Gloucester, Massachusetts. The town’s roots grow deep into fishing for Gloucester. Conveniently located next to Boston in some of the coldest east coast American waters, Gloucester has grown the proud reputation of a quirky society and a prosperous fishing industry. Ed, however, is not alone in his struggles to provide for his three kids as a fisherman. He says that, in the short term, fishermen take punches primarily from cumbersome government regulations that seek to control the population of various species of fish. Above all, both Ed Smith and the Wheeler family recognize that the long-term effects of climate change are beginning to have lasting consequences on their jobs, families, and communities.

important topic
Excellent topic to tackle. I will be interested to see how you balance the complex issues of sustainable fishing, traditional fishing communities' views about "environmentalism," climate change, and all of these camps coming together
Cold Water
Impressive film clip! These are two very important issues that need much attention. Your film presents them in a clever yet serious format.

I look forward to seeing the rest of the movie! Nice work.

there are some great indoor shrimp farms that can help the fisherman's economy.
Great Short Film.
A very timely topic and an interesting documentation of the fishermens concerns. Keep up the goood work. I hope you guys win. I gave it a 5/5.
out there
Making a living at sea is hard enough...regulations and depleated resources are putting families out of business..
The interviews put that fact right on the table.
Nice cuts...interesting old footage clips

excellent idea to interview fishermen, who are in a position to see changes to the ocean close up (and also are interesting individuals). The animation element is a nice touch. Hope to see more from this group.

I think you chose a very interesting topic and reading your pitch and watching your video made me want to see the completed work! Is your video complete? I'm interested in what you will do to improve your video if your pitch is selected. It would be great if you could find a way to tighten up the audio a bit - the interviews are a bit rough in terms of audio quality. Visually, the piece is solid though! I love the fish animation - very sweet - and the b-roll is great too!
Is it all global warming?
Do the fishermen think global warming is the biggest threat to their industry? What about overfishing/government regulation? I'm left wondering more about how things have changed for them. (What do they remember from the good old days?) Also, maybe point the finger at all of us (eating fish in crowded cities, massive traffic, industrial pollution) as perhaps the source of the conflict ultimately... Good shots and cuts--creates an interest in the conflict, for sure!
Cold Water
Very well thought out and presented. Good work to the team on this. Congratulations!
Local Color
They did a good job of quickly catching a little slice of old New England life. I really liked it.
transitioning to a new future
The story of our local fisherman and global warming is one that we need to watch carefully and learn from. Resourcing local food is where our future is sustained. Great clip team!
Cold Water
Good cut with good perspective on the local issues of global warming...what's in it for the fish...show me more!!!!
fishing in New England
This is an excellent short film highlighting the serious difficulties of the fishing industry in New England. Great work!
Effect of golobal warming on fishing on North Shore, MA
This short film is great. It gets quickly to the point and tells an important story. Add in an intro similar to how you exit and it's killer.
Very Interesting
This is something that has a great impact on the area where I live. I am interested in more information about it.
