Open Call: Rough Cuts
The Legend of the End of the World (Rough Cut) (03:32)
Francesca Talenti
This is an animated White River Sioux story. Somewhere near the Badlands lives an extremely old woman who is making a blanket out of porcupine quills. Beside her is a huge black dog. Whenever she gets up to stir the soup, the dog pulls the porcupine quills out of the blanket strip. That's because if she ever finishes it, the world will come to an end.
Style: The End of the World is an animation, and the story is told by an American Indian woman in voice-over. The old woman, the black dog, the blanket - all of these are silhouettes of mysterious black shapes against liquid backgrounds of swirling reds and yellows.

The animation on this is great. It is engaging and kinetic but at the same time quiet and calming—that’s tricky to pull off. I liked the way the piece combines different kinds of animation, in a way that makes them complement rather than fight with each other.

The animation is very beautiful and the story is wonderful.
I feel like it is too long, but at the same time, I am wondering what effect music would have on the length for me.
Are you planning on using music?

Hi Marhsall and Ross,
Thanks for your comments!
Ross, yes, I've cut it down and I'm definitely using music and effects. Also that was a temporary voice-over- I now have a much livelier reading, and the image is cut to that.

This is a new version of the animation: the image is now complete, and I have a different voice-over. The only thing missing is the music and sound effects.
New comments welcome!

Sam,
Lovely piece, nice animation. It did not feel to long just right in terms of length.
