In a peaceful voting rights march in Montgomery, Alabama, an overhead shot of the crowd shows Dr. King in the center, flags waving as the march moves down the street. A line of clergy marches, arms linked, then the camera pans the crowd of people, lined with reporters with notebooks and cameras filming. They pass the capital building, flags flying. Police stand on the capital building steps, and a close-up shows a police club at rest in hands behind an officer's back. Montgomery, Alabama, 1965.

In an overhead shot, marchers in Harlem show solidarity with Selma marchers, moving in a Harlem street. A row of marchers holds a "We march with Selma!" banner; women in robes and bonnets march in rows, carrying signs; and somber-looking bystanders watch the march from sidewalk. Slowly and patiently, cautious and orderly, Selma marchers proceed. Their feet pass. At the front of the line, Dr. King is flanked by leaders and supporters as the marchers approach a police line, the officers in helmets with feet spread wide, poised with batons in hand. After an opening shot of the exterior of the White House in winter, flashbulbs pop as President Johnson, seated with Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, signs the historic Voting Rights Act. Next, Katzenebach presides over a press conference, looking over his notes at a podium. We see the back of the reporters in the press corps as Katzhenbach addresses them. A reporter scribbles notes in a close-up and then from behind Katzenbach, we see the reporters taking notes. Washington, DC 1965.

At the starting point of the historic voting rights march from Selma to Alabama's capital city, Montgomery, marchers gather. Dr. Martin Luther King addresses the crowd, which in this third and final attempt to march peacefully, is being protected by national guard units. A soldier passes speaking into his radio; another patrols on his motorcycle. Marchers pick up their sleeping bags, which they will use to sleep at night in the fields along the way. Dr. King leads the march, a garland of flowers around his neck. Children watch from the signpost at the intersection of Sylvan and Alabama Ave. Marchers cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge and a military officer rises from his jeep. Dr. King continues to lead the march on the other side of the bridge. Selma, Alabama, 1965.
